The investigators anastomosed the pouch in 96% of patients using the double stapling method.

The team divided complications into 2 stages including an early stage within 1 month, and a late stage after 1 month.
The annual incidences were calculated, as well as mean onset time, and pouch survival rate.
The investigators found that the overall incidence of complications was 53%. Early complications occurred significantly less often than late complications, in 13% versus 46% of patients, respectively.
The investigators observed that 18% of complications required surgery.
The team noted that the cumulative 5- and 10-year pouch survival rate was 99%.
Dr Arai's team concludes, “The rate of complications after restorative proctocolectomy was almost equivalent to that in other reports, but the pouch survival rate was very high.”
