fiogf49gjkf0d Andrew Burroughs is a Consultant Physician and Hepatologist at the Royal Free Hospital, Liver Transplantation and Hepato-biliary Medicine Unit. He qualified in Liverpool with a MB ChB Honours in 1976, gained his MRCP in 1978 and FRCP in 1991. He is a Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology. He has been Scientific Secretary of the European Association for the Study of the Liver 1997-1999. He continues his association with EASL as administrative secretary until 2001. He is a council member of the United European Gastroenterology Federation until 2002, and a council member of the International Association for the Study of the Liver. He is a member of the MRC advisory board in the UK, from 1997 onwards. He was a member of Council of the British Society of Gastroenterology from 1992 to 1995.
Andrew Burroughs main research interests are portal hypertension, variceal bleeding and coagulopathy, primary biliary cirrhosis, prognosis in liver disease and liver transplantation. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles.
- What made you decide to become a hepatologist?
- I had the opportunity to work at the Royal Free Hospital as a registrar with Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock, when she was my consultant.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock.
- Which research paper influenced you the most?
- The randomized study of paracentesis for cirrhotic ascites by the Barcelona group. They took an old technique, which had been abandoned, and they studied it properly. They resuscitated it to its present every-day practice and saved money by reducing the length of hospital admissions.
- What are the most important facts that you have discovered?
- Firstly, the similarity in symptom presentation between acute fatty liver of pregnancy, and pre-eclampsia; secondly, the statistical preponderance of male births in acute fatty liver, which we now know has a genetic basis.
- What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
- In publication terms, it is not publishing our long-term sclerotherapy trial, well over 15 years ago.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To be part of a Liver Unit with full clinical funding.
- What is your greatest regret?
- Not writing up my thesis on portal hypertension.
- How do you relax?
- With my children at home, and philately.
- What is your favorite sport?
- I watch rugby.
- What is your best place in the world?
- Anywhere without a telephone.
- What is your favorite film?
- 'Bladerunner.'

- Punto, Sporting.

- I tend to avoid all electronic gadgets.

- '1066, The Three Battles.'
