fiogf49gjkf0d Dr Amar Paul Dhillon was born in Jullunder, India, in 1951. He came to Great Britain when he was 5-years old. He attended Gateway Grammar School in Leicester, then studied at St John's College in Cambridge and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, where he remained as a Lecturer. He then went to the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine as Senior Lecturer, and he is now Professor of Histopathology at the Royal Free and University College Medical School.
Amar Dhillon's doctoral thesis concerned 'the neural plexus and neuroendocrine cells of the lamina propria of the appendix'. His research work has included the diffuse neuroendocrine system and its diseases, melanoma, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic liver disease. His current and continuing research and diagnostic interests relate to liver diseases mainly, especially the pathology of liver transplantation, viral hepatitis, hepatic fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
- What made you decide to become a pathologist?
- I am a pathologist because I subscribe to the notion that "thinking is better than knowing, but not as good as looking" (adapted from Goethe). Pathology permits a pretence at all three.
- Who is the teacher you admire the most?
- I have been very fortunate in learning from many great teachers including Jurgen Rode, David Brew, Neville Woolf, Peter Scheuer, Sheila Sherlock and Bob Souhami. I admire them all.
- Which paper influenced you the most?
- 'The limitations of histologic diagnosis', by Oscar N Rambo; Progress Radiation Therapy 1962; 2; 215-224.
- What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
- That one person's fact is another's fiction.
- What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
- Allowing myself to be seduced by the pleasures of medicine from my first intention of becoming an airline pilot.

- By watching television.

- Tennis.

- An evening with friends in an English public house garden in autumn.

- 'The Blues Brothers'.
