fiogf49gjkf0d Akira Terano was born on 27 October 1941, in the Ehime Prefecture, Japan. He is the currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology, Dokkyo University School of Medicine, Saitama, Japan, positions he obtained in 1994.
Professor Terano attended the Ueno High School and then went on to study medicine at the University of Tokyo Medical School, from which he graduated in 1966. In 1982 he also completed his PhD there. He underwent training at the University of Tokyo Hospital between 1966 and 1968, and at the Seirei Hamamatsu Hospital between 1968 and 1975.
Between 1975 and 1979 Professor Terano took up a residency post at the University of Tokyo. He then went on to become a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Universities of Missouri and California, Irvine, until 1982. After this position he returned to the University of Tokyo as an Assistant Professor, where he worked until 1984. He was also appointed Head of Gastroenterology at the Central Railway Hospital between 1982 and 1988. Between 1988 and 1994 Professor Terano was a Lecturer at the University of Tokyo Hospital.
Professor Terano is a member of many distinguished societies. These include the Japanese Association of Internal Medicine, the Japanese Association of Gastroenterology, the Japanese Association of Digestive Endoscopy, and the Japanese Association of Hepatology. Outside of Japan, he belongs to the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.
Professor Tearno was a former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gastroenterology. He is presently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

- I was interested in endoscopy as well as the pathophysiology of peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.

- Gastric cytoprotection.

- The eradication of H. pylori.

- Not winning the Nobel Prize.

- The selection of Upper GI.

- Seeing patients without specific diseases. Sleeping during conferences or meetings.

- Golf, especially with a hole in one (done twice).

- My bed, with my wife. Most stressful though.

- "Twelve Angry Men!".
