Dr Deepak Kumar Bhasin is currently Professor of Gastroenterology at the prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. This institute is situated in north India, 270 miles from New Delhi, the capital of India.
Dr Bhasin obtained the degree of MBBS in 1973 from Government Medical College at Patiala in the state of Punjab, then worked as a Demonstrator in Clinical Pathology at the same organization. Later he joined as Registrar in Medicine and was awarded the degree of MD in Medicine in 1980.
While working as Senior Lecturer in Medicine at Government Medical College, Patiala, he was selected for specialized training in Gastroenterology at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, and was awarded the degree of DM in Gastroenterology in 1983.
After obtaining the degree of DM in Gastroenterology, he set up a fully fledged modern Endoscopy Unit at the Government Medical College, Patiala, in 1984.
In 1987, Dr Bhasin was selected as an Associate Professor at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. He was appointed as Professor of Gastroenterology in July 2000.
His main areas of research are therapeutic endoscopy, with special emphasis on biliary and pancreatic endoscopy, Helicobacter pylori, and portal hypertension.
He is a life member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, the Indian Association for the Study of Liver, the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India. He has been a member of the Governing Council of all these societies. He is also a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India. He is currently President of Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India.
Dr Bhasin has been on the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, the Journal of Association of Physicians of India, and on the panel of Endoscopy Around the World's section of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is currently on the International Editorial Board of Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
