fiogf49gjkf0d Prof Estela Monteiro completed her Residency at the University of Lisbon, Lisbon Medical School, and Santa Maria University Hospital in 1978. Prior to this she had twice been a Fellow in Biochemistry at Lisbon Medical School, as well as Honorary Clinical Assistant in Gastroenterology at the Central Middlesex Hospital in London.
She became a Professor of Internal Medicine in 1978, and a full professor in Gastroenterology in 1991.
Since 1989 she has been a Consultant of Hepatology at the Liver Transplant Unit, Curry Cabral Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal, taking on the role of Chief of the Service of Gastroenterology in 1999.
A recipient of two medical prizes, she is currently a member of 21 medical societies, of which 11 are Portuguese and 10 are from other countries. She has served as a member of the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology (1976-77), Center of Gastroenterology of the University of Lisbon (1979-93) and on the Board of Gastroenterology of the Medical Association (1984-86/1990-93). Other appointments include Vice-President-Portuguese Medical Association for the Prevention of Nuclear War (1991-98) and membership of EUMS (1990-1993).
Prof Monteiro been involved with the European Collaborative Study Group on IBD since 1990 and in 1992. She became Chief Editor of Arquivos Hepato-Gastrenterológicos Portugueses. For the past two years she has also been Chairman of Training Recognition Committee for the European Board of Gastroenterology.
She has 160 publications to her name, 85 of which have appeared in international journals.
Her main areas of research are primary biliary cirrhosis and autoimmune hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, alcoholic liver disease, and liver transplantation.
- What made you decide to become a hepatologist?
- Since my time as a student I felt fascinated by the liver, its functions and its relations with the remaining organs.

- Sir Francis Avery-Jones.
- Which research paper influenced you the most?
- Several immunological papers by Anthony Allison.
- What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
- Is that life must be lived with lots of tolerance.
- What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
- To believe in humankind - although I keep on thinking that is better to believe this than nothing.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To see an end to injustice, war and misery.
- What is your greatest regret?
- To know that one day life is going to finish.
- How do you relax?
- Listening to classical music or reading a good book.
- What is your favorite sport?
- Although I don't practice any, riding is the one that I enjoy most.
- What is your best place in the world?
- Any quiet place by the sea.
- What is your favorite film?
- Gone with the Wind was my favorite movie as a teenager. After that I have several other favorites: Citizen Kane (Orson Wells), Rocco i suoi fratelli e Senso (Luchino Visconti), Casablanca (Michael Curtiz), and Eyes wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick).

- Because I think it is a very exciting program that allows me to keep up-to-date in the field of Gastro/Hepatology - and it is fun.
