- What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist?
- Mere chance. Our division of metabolism in Ulm took over the division of gastroenterology and somebody had to do the work.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- John M. Dietschy. Among many other talents, he was a dedicated rat researcher. After a lengthy and boring clinical presentation he would get up and ask, "That is very nice but how does it apply to the rat?"
- Which research paper influenced you the most?
- The LDL receptor concept by Goldstein and Brown.
- What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
- The compartmentalization of hepatic and intestinal cholesterol.
- What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
- I can't remember.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To find the cause of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, if it is not measles.
- What is your greatest regret?
- Not to have more time for research. The German system of 100% time expenditure on clinical daily duties, even in University hospitals, and research during leisure times is crazy.
- How do you relax?
- With my dog - he understands me.
- What is your favorite sport?
- The tennis my daughter plays.
- What is your best place in the world?
- Ireland.
- What is your favorite film?
- "Paris, Texas" by Wim Wenders.
- What car do you drive?
- A Saab super turbo-racing edition with a big rear mirror showing all the other cars.
- What is your best electronic 'toy'?
- A Sony digital camera
- What book are you reading at the moment?
- "Ulysses" by James Joyce. I have been reading it for the last 20 years or so.
- Why did you get in involved in GastroHep.com?
- Because Roy Pounder convinced me that it's a great idea and the site is extremely informative.
