Geoffrey Metz is Professor/Director of Medical Education at the Epworth Hospital Clinical School, University of Melbourne, Australia.
He qualified MBBS with honours in 1970 at Monash University, Melbourne, and completed his training in General Internal Medicine at Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, before travelling to the United Kingdom where he trained in gastroenterology from 1974 to 1978 at the Medical Research Council gastroenterology unit and department of gastroenterology created by Sir Francis Avery Jones.
He was awarded T. K Stubbins Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, London, to perform research in gastroenterology whilst at the same time completing training as a registrar and then senior registrar in clinical gastroenterology.
He was awarded MD by thesis and MRCP whilst in London.
On returning to Australia, Geoffrey set up a clinical practice at Alfred Hospital and Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, and he has been heavily involved in Medical Education, initially as senior lecturer at Monash University and now in his role at the Epworth Hospital Clinical School, University of Melbourne.
Over the past 25 years he has served on most of the committees of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and is currently Deputy President of the College.
In the late 1980’s, Geoffrey was instrumental in the development of the Australian Association of Consultant Physicians and served as its inaugural President from 1989 to 1991. He remains on the council of that association.
Geoffrey is married to Kaye (Anderson) who is a staff Radiologist in Melbourne. They have three sons, the eldest of whom is training in Internal Medicine and the second in Paediatrics, both through the RACP, whilst the third is completing a Science/Engineering degree at the University of Melbourne.
Geoffrey has interests in travel, theatre, film, music, reading, surfing, football, horse racing and LIFE!
