fiogf49gjkf0d Hou Yu Liu is a Professor of Medicine at Zhang Shan Hospital (the former Shanghai Medical University), Fudan University Medical Center, Shanghai, China. He graduated From Shanghai Medical University in 1959 and has been working at Zhong Shan Hospital since then.
Professor Liu was trained in gastroenterology under Professor ShaoQi Lin. From 1981 to 1982, he was awarded a grant by the WHO to receive further training in hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital in London, under Professor Sheila Sherlock.
Professor Liu has been involved in the research in the pathogenesis and treatment of viral hepatitis, and complications of portal hypertension. For the past ten years, he has also been involved in the development and application of therapeutic endoscopy in China. One of his research areas focuses on the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
Professor Liu is an editorial board member of 13 medical journals and is involved in editing 11 textbooks.
He is married to Lingquan Tang, Professor of Nephrology and Rheumatology, and they have a daughter and a son.
- What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist?
- My wife is a nephrologist. I thought that, if I became a gastroenterologist, neither our children nor us would have to worry about problems associated with things going in and coming out of our bodies.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- I admired Sheila Sherlock the most. She was an erudite and meticulous scholar. When giving lectures, she was always able to find ways to simplify very difficult topics. She also has a very personal approach to teaching her students. Once, in a clinical conference, she walked around while analyzing a case. Suddenly, she stood in front of me and asked, "What day is it today in China?" I was caught by surprise and my mind was at a halt. I couldn't reply. Then she said, "Chinese Spring Festival!"
- Which research paper influenced you the most?
- Gustavsson S. et al., Rapid healing of duodenal ulcer with omeprazole (Double-blind, dose-comparative trial. Lancet 1983; 2: 124-5.I). I was very surprised by the highest healing rate - the highest I had ever seen.
- What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
- The effects of CagA-positive H. pylori strain infections in China are different from those of CagA-positive strain infections in Western countries (1998). J ZhenJiang Medical College 2000, 10(1): 4-6.
- What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
- To let my children go abroad at an early age, so early that they didn't have the chance to learn about Chinese history and literature.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To become a marine officer.

- Not being able to resist family pressures and to pursue my dream of joining the navy after my high school.
