fiogf49gjkf0d Joseph R. Armengol-Miro is Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy at the Vall d´Hebron Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, and Professor of GI Endoscopy at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He trained mostly in Spain as a specialist in gastroenterology and GI endoscopy. Most of his clinical and scientific work has been in GI endoscopy, and biliary and pancreatic diseases.
Professor Armengol-Miro was one of the first in Spain to use digestive endoscopy for GI, biliary and pancreatic therapy. This approach was used extensively in live demostrations around the world: the first in Geneva in April 1978; and then in China, Europe, Canada, and Central and South America.
Professor Armengol-Miro has been President of the Catalonian Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Spanish Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). He has also been Vice-President of the Organization Mondiale d'Endoscopie Digestive (OMED), and Treasurer of the United European Gastroenterology Federation(UEGF).
He has written several books and the first CD-Atlas in digestive endoscopy. He has authored many scientific papers in both Spanish and international journals.
- What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist?
- I was fascinated by the possible applications of GI endoscopy as they were emerging in the early seventies (January 1970). My initial work, though, was in the pancreas and more specifically on secretine with R. Lambert and M.Vagne in Lyon.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- Apart from my teachers in Lyon, Professors M.Levrat, B. Moulinier, and R. Lambert.
- Which research paper influenced you the most?
- The first canulation of papilla.
- What is the achievement you are most proud of?
- Presenting a lecture at the European Congress of UEGW in Berlin, on the utility of Argon Beam Coagulation, and being one of the first pioneers to use it in the world. In 1979 we conducted a trial on the value of Argon Plasma in the treatment of GI bleeding, in Barcelona with P. Cotton, A. Vallon, and B. Laurence (reported in the Lancet and the NEJM).
- What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
- Not learning perfect English.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To show the sceptics the true value of GI medicine.
- What is your greatest regret?
- In the personal field, losing my wife. Professionally, not speaking better English.
- How do you relax?
- Listening to music and walking around the countryside. I also like to collect mushrooms, and to prepare my videos and lectures with my own equipment.
- What is your favorite sport?
- Chess! Also walking around electronic shops in New York at least twice a year (after the Masters Forum in Orlando and the DDW).
- What is your best place in the world?
- Guimera (Lleida)-it is a medieval village full of beautiful architecture, with only 450 inhabitants. It is the place where I was born and where I want to spend my last days.
- What is your favorite film?
- 'Casablanca', 'The Third Man' and 'Strange Journey' with Raquel Welch.
- What car do you drive?
- In daily life in Barcelona I take taxis, but I like to have powerful cars such as a Mercedes, a Jaguar, and a Ferrari (TR).
- What is your best electronic 'toy'?
- All the electronic devices with which I can manipulate endoscopic images-cameras, scanners, computers, videos, the latest laptops available, etc.
- What book are you reading at the moment?
- "Mortal Spring of Lajos Zilay, The History of Saint Michel of Axel Mount".
- Why did you get in involved in GastroHep.com?
- Because I have used the Internet daily for almost twelve years I came across GastroHep immediately. I was one of the first users.
