fiogf49gjkf0d Dr Mark Hamilton is a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in the Centre for Gastroenterology at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust, London, England.
His undergraduate training was at the Royal Free Hospital, where he developed an early interest in gastroenterology. He also completed his postgraduate training here, prior to his consultant appointment.
His research interests have been in the possible pathogenic mechanisms for ulcerative colitis. This was the topic of his MD thesis. Dr Hamilton has also published peer-reviewed articles within this field and, additionally, on 24-hour acid secretion and Helicobacter pylori eradication treatment.
His main clinical interests are predominantly in inflammatory bowel disorders.
- What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist?
- I decided as a medical student that this was a likely career path. This was partly because, from an early stage, I worked together with Professor Roy Pounder in acid-related research, and partly because I was struck by the enormous scope that existed for therapeutic change.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- It is difficult to name one, as I think that in my career I have had the great fortune to be taught and advised by some great physicians.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To learn to fly.
- What is your greatest regret?
- That I haven't learnt to fly yet.
- What is your favorite sport?
- Previously, when I was fitter, it was rowing. Now it is Formula One motor racing.
- What is your best place in the world?
- Anywhere where the weather is good.
- What is your favorite film?
- "The English Patient".
- What is your best electronic 'toy'?
- My Palm V. I could not run my week without it.
- What book are you reading at the moment?
- "A Mad World, My Masters", by John Simpson.

- It seemed an ideal way to bring together up-to-date research, news, and opinions, for all aspects of gastroenterology, in one site.
