Dr Steven Carpenter is a gastroenterologist at the Center for Digestive and Liver Health, Savannah, Georgia, USA.
Dr Carpenter attended the Georgia State University in Atlanta, between 1981 and 1984, where he studied mathematics. From there he went on to study medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta.
From 1988 to 1991, Dr Carpenter was a Resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta, and in 1991, he became a Chief Resident in this department. Dr Carpenter was also a Clinical Scholar in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 1993 to 1996.
In 1996, Dr Carpenter joined the Center for Digestive and Liver Health, Savannah, Georgia, in his current position as a gastroenterologist. He is currently an assistant professor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine and clinical assistant professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. He was honored as teacher of the year by the Internal Medicine house staff at Memorial Health University Medical Center in 2001 and honored as consultant of the year by the Department of Surgery at Memorial Health University Medical Center in 1997.
Dr Carpenter is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.
- What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist?
- I gave considerable thought to a career in General Internal Medicine. Then, during my Internal Medicine Chief Residency, I developed a keen interest in digestive diseases.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- This is a tough question to answer, but Dr James Scheiman and Dr Bill Chey taught me well during my fellowship.
- Which research paper influenced you the most?
- I read Bruce Runyon's paper on evaluation of ascites during my Internal Medicine residency. This paper stimulated my interest in GI.
- What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
- It's all about the patient.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- To be a good physician and a good father, simultaneously.

- Fly fishing.
